Painted at the end of the winter period, this bright and cheerful still life offers a warm and refreshing visual image for the viewer, providing just enough energy to hold onto the promise of approaching spring. The piece is defined by its striking use of complementary colours. The deep, saturated oranges of the citrus fruits stand out vividly against the cool, slate-blue plate and the soft lavender shadows. The painterly, impressionistic brush strokes give the scene a fresh, "spontaneous" feel.
